How to Become a PADI Divemaster on Koh Tao
March 25, 2026
What Is the PADI Divemaster Certification?
The PADI Divemaster (DM) is the first professional-level certification in the PADI system. It qualifies you to lead certified divers on guided dives, assist instructors with dive courses, and work as a professional at dive centres worldwide.
For most people, the Divemaster course is the beginning of a life-changing career â or a gap year that turns into something much longer. Koh Tao is one of the most popular places in the world to complete a Divemaster because of the variety of dive sites, the warm water, and the large dive community.
Prerequisites for the PADI Divemaster Course
To enrol in a PADI Divemaster course, you need to be a certified PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent from another agency), have completed Emergency First Response (EFR) training within the last 24 months, have a minimum of 40 logged dives, and be at least 18 years old.
Most students complete Open Water â Advanced â Rescue â Divemaster in sequence over several months. Some people do the entire journey on Koh Tao, spending 2â3 months on the island.
How Long Does the Divemaster Course Take?
At Siam Scuba, the PADI Divemaster program takes approximately 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your diving experience when you arrive and how many dives you log during the program.
The course involves daily diving â typically 2 dives in the morning and theory or skill practice in the afternoon. By the end you'll have accumulated significant underwater hours, strong buoyancy skills, and hands-on experience assisting with student courses.
What Does the Divemaster Course Include?
The PADI Divemaster course at Siam Scuba covers: dive theory (physics, physiology, equipment, environment, dive skills and environment), water skills assessments, assisting with Open Water and other courses, supervised dive leading on Koh Tao's most popular sites, emergency scenario training, and dive site mapping.
We include a free internship period where you assist on student courses under close instructor supervision â giving you real professional experience before you qualify.
Career Opportunities After PADI Divemaster
A PADI Divemaster card opens doors at dive centres across Asia, the Caribbean, the Red Sea, Australia, and beyond. Most entry-level positions offer free accommodation, free diving, and a basic salary or commission structure.
Many Divemasters continue to the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) â the next step in the professional pathway. As a PADI 5 Star IDC Centre, Siam Scuba can take you all the way from Divemaster through to PADI Instructor without changing dive centres.
